A Cold Winter's Evening

As the cold winter sun is setting

Thoughts flow about all you've done.

Justify to yourself that you did your best

And this was actually a battle you've won.

Weigh your deeds on the justice scale

Praying the good outweighs the bad.

Hope that you are remembered kindly

Making more folks happy than sad.

Remember all the kindnesses

Wander through all of the tears.

You've said your final goodbyes

Now close your eyes and rest without fear.

Your body has finally failed you

None can last forever.

It carried you through your adventures

Now let it go altogether.

All must face this trial alone

None can go together

But she waits for you over there

Young, fresh, and dancing in the heather.

You won't be remembered

The future won't give you glory.

Your memories will only arise

When your sons remember your story.

The cold wind is howling as you close your eyes

Obscuring the movement, paying the toll

Go now in peace old warrior,

The universe has reclaimed your soul.
